Cellport Leader Pat Kennedy to Speak at CTIA
Special Interest Seminar

Emphasizes Central Role of Wireless Handsets in Telematics Future Growth

CTIA WIRELESS 2002, ORLANDO, Fl., March 19, 2002 -- Pat Kennedy, chairman and CEO of Cellport Systems, a leading provider of automotive wireless communications technologies and products, will speak today on the panel of one of the Special Interest Seminars complementing the CTIA Wireless 2002 show being held here this week. Participating in "Revenue Opportunities for the Wireless Industry in Telematics," a seminar presented by Telematics Update Magazine, Kennedy will emphasize the central roles wireless handsets and connectivity standards will play in fostering the future growth of the telematics industry.

"Consumers demand choice in selecting their wireless handsets and carriers, and will not pay for additional components and services they can use only in their vehicles," said Kennedy. "Automakers have an opportunity to jump-start the market by offering telematics solutions that piggyback on the ubiquity of the wireless phone without disrupting how people buy their handsets and services, while handset makers need to start offering phones that are much more telematics friendly."

Discussing "strategies and opportunities for wireless developers in telematics" during the scheduled 11:00 a.m. EST panel discussion, Kennedy and others on the panel will cover the impact of standards on the maturation of the marketplace, the technologies available now to support a profitable and sustainable telematics business, the products and services that will be the most successful and other business topics. The panel will be moderated by James Ruthven of IBM Telematics Solutions.

"The telematics industry needs to focus on systems that are independent of standards and deliver what consumers really want: practical telematics solutions that are easy to install and use, and that don’t require them to change their usage patterns," explained Kennedy. "For the greatest flexibility and investment protection, telematics system should be universal and 'standards agnostic,' able to support a variety of wired and wireless connections to all popular handsets and carrier services now and in the future."

Kennedy believes auto makers, insurance companies, auto financing companies, large corporate fleets, car rental companies and various other commercial needs will drive telematics components into vehicles at little or no cost to the vehicle owner due to the cost savings they will derive. Once vehicles become telematics-enabled, wireless service providers will be able to drive applications to customers for an incremental cost incorporated into the monthly service fee.
